Action C2 – Implementing biosecurity measures

Action C2 – Implementing biosecurity measures

At this stage a series of measures will be taken to minimize the risk of recolonization of the island by the black rat. These measures should be in full swing during the final stages of the eradication. The biosecurity system will put in place:
• preventive action to reduce the possibility that rats enter ships operating connections between Sicily and Lampedusa;
• activation of a system for detecting rats that may arrive on the island. It consists of both a series of normal dispenser equipped with rodent baits and of some strongly attractive monitoring/capture points;
• information campaigns directed towardst residents, tourists and owners of recreational boats, in order to reduce the risk of unintentional introductions of rats due to incorrect behaviours;
• organisation of a detection and rapid response system when rat presence is detected. The adoption of quarantine measures against certain product categories will also be required.
The following measure will be adopted:
• installation of a series of “rat-hotel” at strategic points in the port and in its immediate surroundings. Rat hotels are points strongly attractive to invasive rats, consisting of wooden boxes containing various foods, materials for building nests, rodent bait and snap-trap;
• implementation of a rodent control system at the ferries port departure to Linosa;
• information campaign directed towards residents and second homes owners in order to draw their attention to the potential risk activities which will be better defined according to action A1;
• information campaing towards boaters about precautions to be taken;
• additional actions that can be identified and defined on the basis of what will emerge from investigations indicated in action A1.
Expected results are:
• risk reduction to a tolerable level of island recolonization by black rat;
• collaboration of resident population both in the implementing measures to reduce the risk of rat reinvasion, and in detecting possible cases of presence of invasive rats.
The action will be carried out by the SAF. Some of the field research, such as periodic control of dispensers and distribution of monitoring points of rat presence, will be carried out with the help of DRARFD team.
