Conservazione della principale popolazione europea di Berta maggiore mediterranea Calonectris diomedea e altri uccelli pelagici nelle Isole Pelagie

Action D1 –Fauna, flora and vegetation monitoring

Action D1 –Fauna, flora and vegetation monitoring

Pelagic bird monitoring, in particular of both Mediterranean Yelkouan Shearwater and Mediterranean Storm Petrel, will be carried out on pelagic islands. An accurate analysis of the benefits achieved, estimated on a set of target species and habitats, as well as a detailed investigation of adverse reactions seem indispensable in order to assess results on the conservation of pelagic birds in relation to both economic and environmental costs. Monitoring activities will be conducted on the possible permanence (post-intervation) of nuclei of black rats on Linosa, and on species that may be affected by the eradication of black rats on Linosa. These species are Mediterranean Cory’s Shearwater (direct target of intervention), Peregrine Falcon, Barn owl and Tyto alba.
The evolution of flora and vegetation will also be evaluated in areas where Carpobrotus and Nicotiana will be eradicated.
A list of the most damaged plants will be drawn up where the two alien species are found and a phytosociological studies will be conducted where the two alien species are less common and have not substantially altered the original community.
Although these analyses have been conducted in other islands where eradication of species has been carried out, the case of Linosa must be fully described, as it is innovative for some aspects at Mediterranean and European scale, being Linosa a relatively large island – very large in Mediterranean context – with a significant human population.
In Lampedusa monitoring of reproductive success of Mediterranean Yelkouan Shearwater in the presence and absence of rodent control is necessary to assess the impact of rats and identify appropriate conservation measures. Activities will be carried out by SAF.
